On being passionate about storytelling through video…
I tell peoples’ stories through the power of video. Video is such an effective medium for businesses. I film, edit and direct. I combine all the skills I’ve learnt over the years. I love what I do and seeing the impact it makes.
On immigrating to New Zealand…
I came to New Zealand with my family in 2002 from London. I came as I was offered a job as senior news director for TVNZ. I stayed because of the amazing opportunities that NZ offers myself and my family. It has also given us a respect for nature and love for the outdoor lifestyle. In contrast to the UK, the simple act of seeing a blue sky and the sea on a daily basis is an absolute gift.
On building a career in film…
I did a degree in design, specialising in film. I then got a position at the BBC as an assistant editor, then editor for news. I became a news director at the BBC and then went to Australia for a while to direct sport. On returning to the UK I joined the 24 hour news revolution, directing some of the most amazing global news stories of the 90s like the fall of the Berlin Wall. I then launched a TV channel and then went to the BBC as a Creative Director. I came to NZ as a life choice for my family, joining TVNZ. I now have my own video production company Jacket Productions.
On overcoming adversity…
While there are many creative disciplines, nothing can beat persistence. If you fail the first time, try, try, try again. I love what I do, and that passion and dedication has taken my work to millions of screens across the world.
On applying the sustainability movement to life…
We all have a role to play in the future of this world. Even the smallest acts can make a difference – like knowing what really should go in the recycling bin.
On being inspired by music…
Music is one of my big inspirations (I’m a huge Rolling Stones fan). My family bought me a vinyl player, and the impact it has had is beyond the music – it helps me stop the world on a Sunday morning. When I am editing a video, it is amazing how a piece of music can change the whole feeling of the video.
On an inspiring book…
I recently read ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’. The story is about a dying man sharing what he has learnt. A favourite quote from the book is: “Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.”
On someone significant in my life…
My wife Sian, she is just amazing. She has dedicated her life to helping others and sharing her unique gifts of connection and insight. We often work together and her talent for presenting and interviewing never ceases to amaze me. She encourages me to be brave and makes me laugh every day.
On being grateful…
When I think of specific times of gratitude – there are several! Many involve my family surviving a medical emergency or accident: My wife surviving cancer, my premature son surviving, my eldest son surviving a bad head injury. Life is so precious, it can be taken so quickly, we should be grateful every day for this gift.
On why I contribute to Great Full….
Great Full is an awesome concept that delivers great results to deserving charities. Each campaign involved some of our best creatives who are stepping in to help. As I have been editing the videos, the interviews give a fascinating insight into another part of their characters.
